1. I'm not able to update currency rates. What should I do?

There are several ways to update currency rates. Please refer to 'Updating Currency Rates' section of User Guide, and choose a way that suits you best.

Let's assume that you cannot update currency rates directly using PC-enabled BcalcPalm server. In this case, before the rates updating on your Palm you need to start BCalcPalmServer.exe program on your PC (included into the package). Connect your Palm to your PC, close HotSync manager if opened, start BCalcPalmServer.exe. Next, configure BCalcPalmServer. Doubleclick on the BCalcPalmServer's icon in the system tray in order to setup it. If you use a PROXY connection, enable the 'Use HTTP Proxy' checkbox and fill in the information about your PROXY server. After that you need to set the Communication port for connection between your Palm and PC. Select a COM port for connection (the 'Palm Com-munication' section of BCalcPalmServer Options windows).

Now make sure your settings work: press the 'Make .PDB' button in the Options window of BCalcPalmServer. The currency rates database (BcalcPalmDB.pdb) will be saved in the default directory of the program. Then you can install it to your Palm with the help of HotSync manager.

If everything is correct, you can try to update rates via your Palm. Just perform all the steps above, except for the 'Make .PDB' step. Instead of it - press the 'Check rates' button on your Palm, specify connection parameters (select BcalcPalm Server, and specify whether the IR-port is used), and click the 'Connect' button.

If you did everything correctly, the currency rates will be updated instantly.

2. I don't know what I should type in the PROXY section. Any suggestions?

If your computer uses a proxy server to access the Internet, then you have to specify your PROXY settings (server name, its port, your login, password) in the section to be able to update currency rates via your Palm. If you have no clue whether your PC uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet, you can check whether proxy settings are configured for your current Internet browser.

To do so:
1) go to the Internet Options of your current Internet Browser (for example in Netscape you should go to: Edit/Preferences.../Advanced/Proxies/Manual Proxy Configuration/View...). There you will find the information about your current PROXY settings. Just copy and paste them to the "Internet Options" section of the BCalcPalmServer. (If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer go to: Tools/Internet Options.../Connections/ LAN Settings.../Proxy Server)
2) or you can just ask your system administrator for help.

3. When I try to update currency rates the message 'Can't connect to server' is displayed. What does it mean?

This message indicates that the rate update request cannot reach our server at www.belcaf.com. Make sure you have accurately followed steps 1 - 8 described in the section 'Automatic Update from the Palm Application with a help of PC-enabled BcalcPalmServer' of User Guide. Also, make sure that BCalcPalm server is configured correctly (for details, see the BCalcPalm Server section of User Guide).

4. The following messages is displayed: 'HTTP Error. HTTP request failed'. What should I do?

This message indicates that the currencies cannot be updated at the moment. Such situation may occur due to the following reasons:

  • your proxy settings are invalid. See the 'BcalcPalm Server' section of User Guide for help;
  • we are currently testing a new version of the calculator;
Make sure you configured your proxy settings correctly or try to perform your request later again.

6. I tried everything you told me, however I'm still not able to update currency rates. I have no idea what to do!

As a universal solution to such cases, we have developed a feature of direct .pdb file downloading with database of currency rates inside. To download the *.pdb file with updated currency rates, go to the following Internet location: http://www.sam-solutions.net/cgi-bin/pdbload.pl. Next, install the *.pdb file to your Palm with a help of HotSync.

7. Do you have a BcalcPalm Server for Macintosh?

At present, BCalcPalm Server for Mac is still under development. We will do our best to provide Mac-compatibility in the next version of the calculator. For now, Mac users can update currency rates by direct download of the .pdb file via current Internet browser. You can also take advantage of a cellular phone connection, or a direct Internet-connection. However, in the latter case you should know how to arrange a direct Internet-connection via your Palm.

8. I'm not sure where I have to enter my serial number. Could you please help?

Every time you launch a shareware Business Calculator version on your Palm, you will see a nag-screen with a 5-second delay before you can start working. On this nag-screen, you will see two buttons at the bottom:

  1. 1. 'Ok', with running countdown,
  2. 2. 'Register'
Click 'Register' and enter the serial number you received after a registration on our website.

Even when you delete or install a more recent version of BCalcPalm on your Palm, the information about the serial number remains in the registry. Thus, if you entered a serial number once, and didn't reinstall your Palm OS since, then there's no need to enter your serial number again.

9. When I try to launch your calculator, the screen of my Palm flickers, and the program doesn't start (or the system restarts). Any ideas?

Try to reinstall our program completely. Remove BcalcPalm and BcalcPalmDB, and then install the most recent version available at our website. (http://products.sam-solutions.net/download/bcalc.zip). If the problem recurs, reach us at Technical Support area with description of your hardware and PalmOS version. Also, specify whether our product worked at your Palm before.
